In July 2020 we said we were ready to come back, better, in an open letter to our fans.
Heading into the opening rounds of Season 7, to tackle our first test as an FIA World Championship, a pair of night races in the Diriyah desert, Formula E and its ecosystem are united as one team behind our vision to accelerate sustainable human progress through the power of electric racing. Our Positively Charged spirit drives us forward on our mission as we race for better futures, fusing a unique and bold combination of thrilling electric street racing, innovation, sustainability and positive impact.
But before our first race, here’s a quick reminder of some of the activities we’ve launched so far (and we’re only just getting started!).
During this unprecedented period in human history, communities are uniting, bound together by common trials. The Formula E community of teams, manufacturers, partners, broadcasters, host cities and fans have an opportunity to deliver on the global demand for sustainable innovation through our sport’s power to excite fans while acting as a catalyst for positive change. Change. Accelerated. is our Season 7 campaign designed to express the spirit and vision of our unique sport while delivering a message pushing us not just to embrace change but to accelerate towards it.
Change. Accelerated. will come to life through our content, communications, projects and partnerships – telling a truly integrated story of Formula E’s drive to become a beacon of optimism and a powerful force for accelerating change – both on and off the track.
Our commitment to creating better futures includes a promise to nurture a culture of inclusivity by creating opportunities for under-represented groups in our sport.Designed with inclusivity at its core, the Open Talent Call for Presenters was the first initiative of the Electric Futures programme, and saw 21-year-old broadcast journalism student Derin Adetosoye achieve her childhood ambition to become a presenter. For Formula E, nurturing a culture of inclusivity and creating better futures for the next generation isn’t a choice, it’s a responsibility and one that Formula E is committed to for the long-term. Returning in Season 7, with a second instalment for raw GenZ creators, Talent Call plays an essential part in connecting Formula E with next generation sport fans.
Derin has already been co-hosting the new esports series Formula E: Accelerate and will join the existing presenting line up this weekend for her first real-life race in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship live from Diriyah.
Building on Formula E’s success with the ABB Race at Home Challengein support of UNICEF, all-electric street racing has returned to the virtual world for Season 7 with a fresh new esports series - Formula E: Accelerate. Through the Accelerate series, Formula E is looking to maximise the growth of electric racing.
Over six events, 24 rising stars from the world of motorsport and esports are competing against one another for the top podium spot. This innovative new series blends the real and virtual worlds, with each competitor scoring Formula E Accelerate points for a real-life Formula E team.
Virtual racers receive expert tips, mentoring and talent development from the team they are attached to and the winner will earn the ultimate all-electric driving experience of taking the Gen2 car for some laps around a Formula E circuit during an E-Prix weekend.
In September 2020, we announced that Formula E was the world’s first sport certified net zero carbon since inception. This milestone was achieved by following the recommended approach set out by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): effective measurement of carbon output, prioritising footprint reduction and offsetting remaining unavoidable emissions.
However, for Formula E, a sport founded with a purpose bigger than the sport itself, to counteract climate change, this is a race with no finish line. Formula E is dedicated to its commitment as a leader of sustainable innovation in sport and as a signatory of the EU 2030 letter, supporting the UN’s global Race to Zero campaign. Moving forwards, we remain focused on reducing our own carbon footprint further and have committed to aligning our emissions to climate science by 2030.
Formula E is naturally embedded at the heart of a critical global conversation and established as a leader in the sustainability agenda for the sports and entertainment industries. By championing a triple bottom line approach of business growth through the prioritisation of people, planet and profit,we can maximise Formula E’s impact on climate change and create positive legacies in our host city communities and beyond.
Showing the natural alignment of our reason and our racing, in Season 7 we will be creating a Positively Charged moment of reflection on the grid ahead of each race event. These moments will shine a spotlight on the work of our charity partners. In Diriyah, we will take this moment to celebrate the great work of our local charity partner, the Society of Autism Families (SAF).

The ABB FIA Formula E Championship and UNICEF joined forces to focus on keeping children around the world health and ensuring they aren’t missing out on vital education in the face of coronavirus. To build awareness to the cause we ran the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge, an eight week esports sim racing competition featuring all 24 drivers with the aim to raise funds towards changing the formula for children affected by coronavirus.
